The Wider World
As guardians of our part of the Ochil Hills, we’re keenly aware of our responsibility not just to the organic land we protect, but to the Earth as a whole – including the folk we share it with.
Here’s a few of the things we’re doing to support people and planet.
Recyclable Bottles and Cans
Every Highland Spring bottle can be recycled – so you can give them another life. And we’re committed to using more recycled materials wherever we can. In fact, did you know we were the first major water brand to introduce a bottle made from 100% recycled PET (excluding the cap and label)?
Packaging unwrapped
Of course, even with recyclable plastic bottles (cap on), it’s good to use less rather than more. That’s why we reduced the weight of our smaller Highland Spring PET bottles (330ml, 500ml, and 750ml) by 20%, and recently reduced the weight of our larger 1L and 1.5L bottles.
Lower Emissions
We’re working hard to reduce our carbon footprint, and are committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2040. To achieve this, we commit to reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions 90% by 2040 from a 2019 base year.
Cleaner Transport
The way we transport our spring water is just as important as where it comes from. Our dedicated rail freight facility helps us transport our products in a sustainable way, removing 8,000 HGV movements and over 3,000 tonnes of CO2 each year. And where we do use road vehicles, we’re transitioning to lower carbon, fossil free alternatives to diesel, as well as using electric forklift trucks where we can.
Supporting Biodiversity
We’re all about healthy eco-systems, which is why we’ve planted over 2,500 trees on our protected land, as well as wildflowers for bees and butterflies. And of course – we keep that land protected. And in 2001, that protection was rewarded with organic accreditation by the Soil Association – a standard which we’ve held ever since.
Stronger Communities
We’ve donated over 200,000 bottles of water to the Scottish Ambulance Service in recent years – saving lives is thirsty work! We also provide surplus water to Launch Foods, a charity in Glasgow, to help keep children healthily hydrated. In 2023, we supported Kenny Logan’s World Cup Challenge raising funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. And as part of our good neighbour programme, every year we provide financial and product donations to local causes and charities close to our sites.
Sport and hydration
Sport and hydration go hand-in-hand, and we have a long history of sponsoring and supporting major sport stars, tournaments and grassroots community events.
Tethered caps
We are committed to looking after both the land from which we draw our water, and the environment around it. That’s why we’re changing our cap design to make our bottles easier to recycle – the cap will now stay attached to the bottle after opening.
